IDEAL PROJECT

This is the new site for the IDEAL PROJECT (Integrated Development Routes for Optimized Cast Aluminium Components presented by Centro Ricerche Fiat within the 5th Framework.

The task of the IDEAL project is to create an integrated suite of software tools for the design and production of more reliable, efficient and optimised cast aluminium components.

The achievement of this task, which will have significant implications for the exploitation of the potential for aluminium castings, will be the sum of a number of specific achievements. The main scientific objective is to better understand the evolution of the aluminium structure during casting (including the filling of the die and solidification) and the post casting process stages. Residual stresses in the component after cooling is also of great interest.

The technological objective is to achieve a more efficient exploitation of the material by supplying realistic mechanical characteristics to designers. In particular, the main interest is the integration of numerical codes for casting process simulations, including the prediction of microstructural and mechanical behaviour of cast alloys, coupled with the optimisation of the manufacturing cycle, as well as structural analysis, including the analysis of the crash behaviour of cast components.
